Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History Daily: The weirdest hidden track…EVER!

It was once very common for an artist to hide a song on a CD. Maybe it was an unlisted track. Maybe it was buried deep in the silence after you think the CD has finished playing. Some even hid a track or two in the space before a CD begins, the so-called “track 0” trick. But here’s my all-time favourite hidden track scheme.

In 1971, a band called Violent Sedan Chair released a mythical record called Seven Suns. Legend had it that if you played the album’s eleventh song—which is called “Greenmania”–on multiple turntables at the same time, you could induce hallucinations. Nice try. The album was actually a product of the JJ Abrams show called Fringe, which aired on Fox in 2009.

It’s said that 500 copies of the album were produced and were seeded to indie record stores. Cool idea, huh?
