Ongoing History Daily: When the music industry had money…

Before CD sales completely tanked, there was plenty of money flowing through the music industry to stage interesting, fun, and weird promotional campaigns to promote albums. For a while, it seemed to be a thing for bands to play a set for fans aboard an airplane.

In November, 28, 2005, Korn (together with MTV Europe), held a contest for fans and soldiers on leave in which the prize was a seat on a plane with a flight plan from London to New York, passing over both Iceland and Greenland. The band had to set up in an emergency bulkhead row and played a four-song set using battery powered practice amps and a kid-sized drumkit. Singer Jonathan Davis sang over the plane’s PA system.

When the plane landed, everyone when to a gig that was filmed for a DVD. They don’t have many contests like that anymore.
