Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready has written a grunge opera

Rewind 35 years ago when grunge was still a new thing in Seattle and unknown by almost anyone outside the Pacific Northwest. Would any of the members that scene have ever guessed that their little thing would one day become the subject of a rock opera?

Mike McCready was part of that community as part of Love Chile, Temple of the Dog, and then Pearl Jam, so he had a front row seat to the rise of grunge. Now that a new Pearl Jam album is apparently (almost) in the can, Mike is spending time working on a rock opera that will honour musicians who are no longer with us, most notable Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone), Kurt Cobain, and especially Chris Cornell.

How will also this spin out? A record, for sure. But he hasn’t ruled out a stage production or a play. The script runs 18 songs, so it will be a pretty intense thing.

We’ve already seen a bit of the final product via an Instagram post of a Cornell tribute song called “Crying Moon.”
