Is Pearl Jam’s/Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron the Next Dave Grohl? He’s Releasing Some Solo Material.

Drummers often don’t get the respect they deserve. When Kurt died, everyone assumed that if either of the two guys was going to continue a successful career in music, it would be bass player Krist Novoselic. The drummer? The hairy guy in the back? Please. Never gonna happen. Drummer jokes? Got plenty of those. And let’s just remember that even on his very worst day, Ringo was a friggin’ Beatle and you weren’t.

This is why I caution anyone to jump to any conclusions about Matt Cameron. After years of holding down gigs with both Pearl and Soundgarden (and that Temple of the Dog reunion), Matt has decided to step out from behind his kit and try making his own music.

Cavedweller, Matt’s first solo record, will be out September 22. He does all the singing and the guitar work while the rhythm section is made up of the same people who helped David Bowie record Blackstar.

This week, a track called “Time Can’t Wait” was released. Matt says he played this for Chris Cornell earlier this year and it got a big thumbs-up. I can see why. Give it a listen here.

  • If I’m not mistaken Matt Cameron also is lead vocals in Wellwater Conspiracy.
