Photo Essay: John Lennon’s Rolls Royce

When John Lennon took delivery of his first Rolls Royce in 1965–a Phantom V Limousine, it was painted what the factory called “Valentine Black.”  That just would not do, so Lennon forked out £290 for a custom paint job.

The paint job is NOT supposed to be psychedelic, although that’s what most people assume. The pain job was inspired by an old gypsy camper trailer Lennon had in his back yard and asked artist Steve Weave to paint the Roller in the same sort of Romany style.

Inside is a TV, a mini-fridge, some very shagadelic upholstery and a special turntable on springs that allowed Lennon to play 45 RPM records when he was being driven somewhere.

Last I heard, the car wasin a Vancouver museum.  True?  More pictures here.
