Poll: Who won the battle of the halftime show booking, the Grey Cup or The Super Bowl

Maybe you had the same reaction the Super Bowl committee announced that Usher was the big get for the halftime show in Las Vegas in February: Meh. Usher? That’s the best you could do?

I mean, sure, he’s got a lot of hits and has sold something like 24 million records, but I’m still underwhelmed, especially since the mayor of Las Vegas was lobbying for AC/DC. But that was never going to happen because (a) AC/DC is expensive and the halftime show literally doesn’t pay sh*t, and (b) the NFL has a halftime show production deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. As long as Jay-Z is in charge, the gig will go to people he likes.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Green Day will perform at halftime for the Grey Cup at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton on November 18. If memory serves, they will be the biggest name to play the Grey Cup in…well, ever. Okay, so maybe this is on par with Shania Twain in 2002 and 2017. Keith Urban showed up in 2019. And then there was the Bieber extravaganza in 2012.

When it comes to rock, there was Lenny Kravitz in 2007, Nickelback in 2011, and Fall Out Boy in 2015. And if you want to stretch things, Imagine Dragons got the job in 2014. Objectively, Green Day is a good get.

Yeah, there will be complaints that the National Canadian Drunk won’t have a domestic act. “What about Arkells? They’re a hometown act but they also played halftime at the Grey Cup in 2021. Too soon. Besides, I think we’ve demonstrated that grown up enough to be able to handle a non-Canadian act for our game.

But back to the headline of this post: Who do you think booked the better act for their halftime show: The Super Bowl with Usher or the Grey Cup with Green Day?

  • I think it sucks that Green Day is playing the Grey Cup. I think Green Day should play at Copps the night after (or the night before) of the Grey Cup for those of us who don’t want to sit outside in November and watch football.
