Prince Goes Grunge! (No, Really! And It’s Good!)
With a new band (3rdEyeGirl, featuring Canadian guitarist, Donna Grantis), a new tour and with, apparently, a new musical headspace, Prince World is an interesting place to be these days. His 35th album, Plectrum Electrum, will apparently be out later this year–and from what anyone can tell, it, well, rocks.
Check out this track “FixUrLifeUp.” The dude has gone grunge. Grunge-ish, anyway. Will alt-rock radio have the guts to play this one? Hell, I would. How is this different the Chili Peppers or Lenny Kravitz?
I saw him perform on Jimmy Fallon's show with an all female backing band. I noticed right away that it was heavier than his usual R&B / funk style. He played two songs and they did rock! It really did remind me of Lenny Kravitz and Hendrix. He is definitely a chameleon. Hopefully this album does well. Though I pessimistically doubt it as he's been away from the public eye for so long and everyone kind of blows him off as a celebrity looney. But great tunes from him on this!

For my money, their reworking of "Let's Go Crazy"
could easily be a lost Living Colour track. No complaints here.
That is rather impressive stuff from His Purpleness.
Away from the public eye for too long? It's his 35th album! He's been hard at work, just out of the "mainstream" that is the world of candy pop and Belieber (shite). He presented the Grammy for Song of the Year in February. Oh, and remember, Bowie was literally gone for 10 years, but has seen a resurgence.
The key here will be if Prince adds lyrics to these new songs (this is the second instrumental I've heard from this project). Price's lyrics are not always radio-friendly.
It'd been nice to see Prince's 2013 sales numbers vs U2's Danger Mouse-produced album sales numbers –come October (single, just in time for 2014 Grammy nomination) and November (at start of 2015 Grammy eligibility season).
Prince vs The Edge…. There's a double bill I'd pay to see.
Prince is in no way grunge…Prince was rocking out funky guitar licks before there was anything called grunge. Uh, "Purple Rain" outro anyone? "Let's Go Crazy" solo? People have memories shorter than Prince when it comes to Prince's talent. It will be interesting to see if Rock stations or even urban music stations will show any balls and play this.
