Producer of a CFNY/Martin Streek documentary could use your help (UPDATED WITH MORE VIDEO)

For the past couple of years, filmmaker Wil Dunlop has been piecing together a documentary that seeks to cover off three things: (1) The life and times of legendary CFNY/102.1 The Edge personality Martin Street; (2) The history of station itself; and (3) the rise and fall of alternative music club culture.

A lot of work has already been completed on the project, which has the title Keep It Locked and Cranked. Here’s a teaser that was created by a friend using clips from Toronto Mike’s podcast. And don’t be freaked out by the black screen; it’s just audio

Wil has collected multiple episodes of the Club 102 TV show which was hosted by Chris Sheppard and produced out of CHCH/Hamilton. He’s also found early recordings of Martin when he replaced Sheppard in his Saturday slot, two hours of raw video of Club 102 at the Phoenix, and a few more gems.

For example, he’s uncovered that the first edition of Club 102 was on Saturday, January 18, 1986, when Sheppard replaced David Marsden. He’s even found the press release announcing the switch. Martin took over that slot in September 1992 (date uncertain; can anyone help?)

And remember the retro nights at Whiskey Saigon? The first night was March 16, 1995, just over 25 years ago.

Wil continues to gather interview material but could use some help with a few items and would like to source the crowd. He’d like to hear from you if you have any of the following:

  • Any photos you may have of Martin and Chris Sheppard taken as they hosted alt-rock nights at clubs around Toronto. Any era, any club.
  • Any off-the-radio recordings you have of anything from Club 102 with Sheppard through to Martin’s gigs at The Kingdom, The Phoenix, and the various incarnations of Whiskey Saigon.
  • Any additional video of the Club 102 TV show.
  • CFNY swag from back in the day (we called it “paraphenalia” back then.)

If you can help, please contact Wil through this email: [email protected]
