Pussy Riot, the Band That Pissed Off Putin, Has a Fan with an Ax

Not a metaphorical one, either.

Pussy Riot is the all-female punk band in trouble for staging a musical protest against the political establishment at home in Moscow.  They were arrested in February and are awaiting trial while in “detention.”

Meanwhile, fans are coming to their defense.  Last Wednesday (April 18), 13 people were arrested during a demonstration in support of the band.  Vladimir Putin even issued a statement saying that “The decision must be taken by the legal authorities, in strict accordance with the law.”

The latest news features a man with an ax breaking into the office of the judge presiding in the trial. From the Moscow Times:

A man wielding an ax on Monday threatened a Moscow judge whose cases include that involving the controversial jailing of members of all-female punk band Pussy Riot.

The man asked people standing near the office of Yelena Ivanova in the Tagansky Court building where he could submit a court petition, Gazeta.ru reported, citing a correspondent for the news site who was in the courthouse at the time of the incident.

Having not received an answer to his query, he entered Ivanova’s office. After some time, screams for help sounded from inside, and bailiffs went in. They came out with the man, who was in handcuffs and holding an ax.

“At first, he behaved decently,” a witness told Life News.

Responding to questions from witnesses about what had happened, the bailiffs replied that the man had threatened the judge with an ax.

A pro Pussy Riot demonstration is scheduled for outside the Russian embassy in London for tonight.
