Random Music News for Saturday, August 27, 2016

With all the talk of a potentially habitable planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, I urge you to read The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin. Here’s the plot: Earth sends message to the Alpha Centauri system. Message comes back: “Nice to meet you. We’re coming to invade. See you in about 400 years.” It’s honestly one of the best sci-fi books I’ve ever read. (There’s a sequel and the third part of the trilogy will be published next month.) And now, music news.

  1. After appearing at the Prophets of Rage show in Toronto, Dave Grohl showed up down the highway in Waterloo. Why? It’s a tech centre, so could that be the reason?
  2. Adele accepted a fan’s wedding invitation in the middle of a show.
  3. Big Shiny Tunes is a cover band that only plays songs from the Big Shiny Tunes CD collections. Clever.
  4. U2’s The Edge has a new signature Fender Strat. He talks about it here. (Via Larry)
  5. The Lemmy statue. As Tom points out, it should have been created with a Jack-and-Coke in one hand.
  6. This was the summer streaming took over. Here’s what I mean by that.
  7. Cuteness alert: This baby wants you to turn up the radio so he can dance.
  8. Coldplay’s current tour has earned $144 million–so far.
  9. Bruce Springsteen just broke his own record for the longest concert ever.
  10. It’s possible that Spotify will break the 50 million subscriber mark within the next six months.
  11. Autoplaying videos on Facebook with the sound already on? No thanks. But maybe that’s just me. (I detest autoplay.)
  12. Here’s a look at the career of Sharon Osbourne in pictures.
  13. So was there a “song of the summer?” I don’t care, but lots of people do.
  14. A school in Oregon banned rap music. You can probably guess what happened next.
