I’d never heard of Murder of Crows, a project based in Duluth, Minnesota, consisting of Gaelynn Lea and Alan Sparhawk, until Babak sent me an email. There’s more emotion in this music than anything I’ve heard in a long, long time. Start with the performance of “We’ll Linger in the Sun” and then move to a 2012 performance that also includes a cover of Nirvana’s Heart-Shaped Box” (It starts around the 6 minute mark.) Wow. I mean…wow.

  • I first heard of Gaelynn Lea after she won last year’s NPR “Tiny Desk Competition” and I’ve heard her on a number of programs since then. She is the kind of unique talent with a very different sound (and a great sense of humour) that the autotuned, algorithm loving “stars” of music today should be fearing and aspiring to
