Crime

Remember when the wife of Weezer’s bass player threatened cops with a gun? There’s been a development.

Jill Shriner has led an interesting life, including a stint in a harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of the Sultan of Brunei (she wrote a book about it). She’s now married to Weezer bass player, Scott Shriner.

Back in the spring, cops were chasing some suspects through a residential neighbourhood in LA. That’s when they encountered Jill with a gun. From her backyard, she threatened the cops with a gun. When she refused to drop it, she was shot in the shoulder. Jill survived but was charged with attempted murder.

There was video, of course.

She pleaded not guilty.

The whole thing has since gone to court. Jill was granted a two-year mental health diversion program. If she successfully completes that, all the felony charges against her could be dropped.

What, exactly, is this “diversion?” In California, you can be declared “eligible and suitable” for community-based treatment for mental health and/or substance abuse issues without going to jail. Jill has to stay away from all alcohol and drugs. plus attend weekly therapy sessions, be subjected to random drug and alcohol tests, and attend at least three AA meetings a week. No more guns or knives, either. One slip-up and it’s off to the hoosegow.

While we don’t know what precipitated the threats against police, it’s pretty easy to read between the lines.

She has to return to court on January 9 for a progress report.
