Remembering Dial-Up Modems
Ah, I remember this sound coming from my US Robotics 56k dial-up modem that cost me a couple of hundred dollars. Although no one ever need hear this noise again, it’s kinda cool to see it represented visually.
What it doesn’t capture is the sound of mom picking up the phone in another room, spiking your connection. I don’t miss that sound, either.

A couple of years after the Internet became the mainstream, I was at a conference being conducted by Intel. A few of the bigger retailers were there, and as my friend and I were walking along we met up with one of the employees for one advertising services to help you get online. I nudged my friend and said quietly, "Watch this." I walked up to the young lady and asked her about the services they offered, and let her launch into the company spiel. At the end of it, I said, "That sounds fantastic and I'd like to sign up but will it work with my C64 and 2400 baud modem?". Her face just froze for about a minute, it was hilarious, she had no idea how to respond.
Wow Sniper, you must be the cool guy in your group of friends.
