RIP Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys

I was afraid of this.  It’s been quiet–too quiet–in the Beastie Boys world over the last year.  We’d been told that Adam Yauch had beaten cancer and that he was in the process of making a full recovery.

After being diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2009 which resulted in a Beastie Boy hiatus, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two finally was released on April 27, 2011, to generally positive reviews.  “Make Some Noise,” the first single, marked a solid return to form for these guys.

And then…nothing.

Apparently, Adam hadn’t beaten the parotid cancer after all.  He didn’t show for the Beastie Boys induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the result of some kind of illness.  There’s word that he’d gone totally vegan on the recommendation of Tibetan doctors while continuing radiation treatment and surgery.  Although the cause of his death hasn’t been announced yet, the assumption is that it was cancer.

Adam “MCA” Yauch (aka Nathaniel Hornblower, the Beastie Boys video director) was 47.  He’s survived by his wife and daughter.
