RIP Andy Rourke, bass player for The Smiths, dead at 59

Although the Smiths were around for about five years (1982-87), they cast a long, long shadow over all of British music and remain one of the most influential. Most of the attention has gone to the Morrissey/Marr partnership, but the band wouldn’t have been what it was without a solid rhythm section. Mike Joyce kept the beat while Andy Rourke provided the low-thump and groove.

Some time ago, Rourke was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His death was announced today (May 19).

Morrissey paid him this tribute.

Johnny Marr posted this.

This came from Mike Joyce.
