RIP Scott Asheton: The Stooges Are Down Another Member

Back in 1970, if there had been a death pool on which member of the Stooges would go first, almost everyone would have chosen Iggy Pop.  But he along with guitarist James Williamson have turned out to be the most resilient of that original lineup.

Original drummer Scott Asheton is the latest Stooge to shuffle off this mortal coil, dying at age 64 on Saturday night from an unspecified illness.  Here the list of all the other fallen Stooges:

  • Ron Asheton (Original guitarist and Scott’s brother): Heart attack, 2009.
  • Dave Alexander (Original bassist): Pulmonary edema related to pancreatitis brought on by alcohol abuse, 1975.
  • Bill Cheatham (Roadie and later second guitarist):  Died of unknown causes in the 70s.
  • Zeke Zettner (Roadie and brief replacement for Dave Alexander): Heroin overdose, 1973.

More on Scott Asheton’s passing at Rolling Stone.
