Rock acts shut out of the Super Bowl halftime show for the ninth year in a row

Rock acts can’t catch a break when it comes to getting a Super Bowl halftime show. The last time anything rock-like got the gig was nine years ago when Coldplay was tapped for a performance in 2016. Before that, it was The Who (2010), Springsteen (2009), and Tom Petty (2008).

The non-rock streak will continue for Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, at Caesars Super Dome in New Orleans. It was announced this weekend (the first Sunday of the new season) that entertainment will come from Kendrick Lamar. It was in 2022 when he was onstage with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent.

Once again, the company booking and producing the halftime show is Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Drake has gotta be pissed,.

While I don’t like them, Maroon 5 played in 2019, so that is more recent. I’m with you on the overall sentiment. Obviously Jay Z’s involvement is gonna skew the choices in a non-rock direction, but I wonder if (sadly) this is just the way it’s going to be, as it’s easier on crews to set up a performance that has no live instrumentation, only vocals?
