Rock My World Canada, chapter 41: Barenaked Ladies

[Mike Carr has put together a massive volume on Canadian music history entitled Canadian Alternative & Indie Reference and Collector’s Guide. It’s an incredible discography of hundreds of bands. This is the latest excerpt from his book. – AC]

Barenaked Ladies (often abbreviated BNL or occasionally BnL) is a rock band currently composed of Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart. Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario as a duo of Robertson and Steven Page. Jim Creeggan and his brother Andrew “Andy” Creeggan joined at the end of 1989, and Stewart was added in 1990 while Andy was on a brief hiatus from the group.

Andy left the band after its second album in 1995 and was replaced by Hearn. Page left in 2009, leaving the group as a quartet. They have won multiple Juno Awards and have been nominated for two Grammy Awards. The group has sold over 15 million records, including albums and singles, and were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in March 2018. “One Week” remains the band’s most successful single.
