Rolling Stones Readers’ Poll: The 10 Worst Bands of the 90s

Wow.  Where to start?  You can read the full desciptions and rationale here, but if you just want the list, here it is.  And what’s with #5?

10.  Dave Matthews Band  (No love for jam bands?)

9.  Ace of Bass (No argument from me)

8.  Spin Doctors (Ditto)

7.  Bush (Really?)

6.  Hootie and the Blowfish (54-40 would beg to differ)

5.  Nirvana (Included for shock value, I’m sure)

4.  Hanson (Easy target, but okay)

3.  Limp Bizkit (Duh…)

2.  Nickelback (More of an 00’s band, really, but nevermind)

1.  Creed (You could see that coming)

  • I can't stand Bush, but Silverchair and Live were MUCH worse.

  • RollingbStone hasn't been a music magazine for years. Too much hipster nonsense. Too many politics.

    Nirvana? Bush?

Please. There were tons of worse bands out there.

  • I pretty much agree with most of this list except Nirvana of course. It's possible though that Nirvana is here because of all the Theory of a NickelCreed crappy imitation bands that they spawned.

  • This is way too lazy and mainstream – it's more of a "bands people hate" list than a "worst bands" list. What about Serial Joe? Remember how much everyone hated Aqua? Or Chumbawumba? Unquestionably one of the worst bands of all time.

In other words, sure, a lot of people dislike the music of Nirvana – maybe they're on your personal "Bottom 10" list – but anyone with an open mind at least respects them as a hugely influencial band. I dont like the Ramones or the Sex Pistols, but i still respect them.

  • Ya. Weird list. I can imagine the poll takers now…a bunch of 15 year old kids wanting to make it look like they know what the 90's was all about. Where the heck is Chumbawumba, or Tag Team, Marky Mark, Vengaboys, or the 100's of one hit wonder dance artists from that era?

But now that I've said that, I'm going to go listen to some 90's music now and bring back some memories.

  • There was a time where I didn't get the Dave Matthews Band. Corny image, vocals too whiny, bland world music pop vibe. Then I saw them in concert. This totally changed my view of them…the musicianship blew me away. This introduced me to their earlier stuff (first 2 albums) which was decent. I'm not a devout fan, but I got it. I had a newfound appreciation for them.

  • I agree with most of this list .. just not Nirvana …and The Spin Doctors!!! Although overplayed, The Spin Doctors had some really great tunes that still live on as earworms to the real 90's kids. Two Princes and Little Miss Can't do Wrong live amongst some of the best memories I have of being a teenager. Drives in the sun, lounging on the couch, learning to harm my liver … all bring this band and it's "against the grain" tunes to the forefront of thought. Give them another listen, while stressless … I guarantee you'll have a few smiles and head bobs.

    Cheers

  • I never really bought into that 'Toad The Wet…Vertical Horizon…Deep Blue Somethin Somethin' vibe. Basically the stuff youd find on the Friends sountrack.

  • So all of the hundreds of commercial 90s bands can be funneled into 10 of the worst? ugh… Rolling Stone. The magazine has become a parody of itself.

  • Nirvana was the worst BY FAR since their leader was a fake singer and a fake guitar player but the immense ignorance ofthe average man of the street made them the band of that decade.
The WORST of the so called "hair metal" bands was WAY BETTER than all the 90's bands combined.
The idiocy of the average American is not to distinguish the garbage from the gold.
Rather than follow the inspiration from great bands like Toto Boston Grand Funk Doobie Brothers Fleetwood Mac Steely Dan The Eagles etc… the dumb americans masturbe hmselves with garbage like numetal emo du(m)bstep (c)rap (s)hit hop and assorted primitive noise garbage.
    That's ridicolous
