Medical Mysteries of Music

Science this track by a rock giant is the “perfect kids song”

If you’ve got kids, you’re probably tired of anything from Frozen, “Wheels on the Bus,” and the awful “Baby Shark.” The results of this new study might give offer ideas for alternatives.

Dr. Michael Bonshor is a professor of music psychology at the University of Sheffield in the UK was curious about what elements went into the perfect kids song. Was there some kind of magic formula that might lead someone to the next “Baby Shark?” (Let’s hope not, but we must press on.)

After analyzing many, many of these songs (and probably losing half his mind in the process), Dr. Bonshor determined that the perfect song for kids has the following attributes:

  • A BPM of 60-120 with a “marching” or “swaying” rhythm.
  • It should be written in a major key so it sounds happy. Don’t worry: the wee tykes will go emo soon enough.
  • A 2/4 or 4/4 beat is essential. That’s for easy walking and dancing. Good for motor skills, you know?
  • Repetitive words and phrases are important. But you already knew that, right?

Dr. Bonshor also noted that there are many rock and pop songs that have these attributes. And out of all the song he analyzed, this one is absolutely perfect for kids. You can either go with this or “Single Ladies” by Beyonce.
