There was a time when music was more tribal than Mali or in South Central LA. You declared your allegiances and affiliations early–and that was it for life.
Two of the biggest tribes were the Mulletheads (fans of mainstream rock, ranging from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin and beyond) and the Alterno-Kids (who believed that it if hadn’t descendent from punk, it wasn’t worth shit.)
The Mulletheads always had the bigger kingdom. For the most part, they ignored the Alterno-Kids but occasionally offered a sneer or put-down in their direction. Meanwhile, the Alterno-Kids minority knew they were the underdogs. And they rather liked that, sneering at the sheeple who went for boring, popular music. They were happy (well, mostly) living in a universe that ran parallel to the mainstream and almost never intersected with.
There were attempts at defection from both sides, but that was difficult. Changing tribes–which involved changing allegiances, fashion sense, lifestyle and more–was akin to deciding to bolt from NASCAR to F1. Or maybe from Al-Qaida to the Tea Party.
