It Seems to Me That Something’s Missing from This List of the 8 Best Movies About the Music Business. But What?
Movies CheatSheet has come up with this list of eight essential movies about the music business. They are:
- Almost Famous
- This is Spinal Tap
- Frank
- Love & Mercy
- 24 Hour Party People
- Inside Llewyn Davis
- Nashville
- Beyond the Lights
Note that all of them are dramas or comedies that deal with the business of music and aren’t standard biopics or documentaries. That’s an important distinction. It’s a good list, but I’ve got a nagging feeling that some films are missing. Here are some for your consideration.
- Straight Outta Compton
- Kill Your Friends
- High Fidelity (a stretch, but still…)
Anything else?

That Thing You Do
A Mighty Wind
My favourite films about music and the music biz are Almost Famous, That Thing You Do, Light Of Day, Spinal Tap, Eddie & The Cruisers, Ray, Control, The Runaways, The Rose.
Empire Records.
24 Hour Party People should be #1. Best documentary is The Filth & The Fury!
They always forget High Fidelity.
My faves –
Begin Again
Be Cool
About A Boy
That Thing you Do
And how about the comedies –
Popstar
Marci X
A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, The Decline of Western Civilization all 3 parts
Phantom of the Paradise, previous are doc’s and not what the list require.
20 Feet From Stardom
Great film–but it’s a documentary.
That thing you do, begin again, hard core logo, the commitments…
