Here Is Your Short List for Britain’s Mercury Prize

The Mercury Prize–the inspiration for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize–released its Short List for 2016. One of these albums will be named best of the year by a panel of UK music industry jurors. The winner will receive a cash prize of £25,000 the night of the September 15 ceremony.

This being Britain (a) the sponsor’s name is included in the title of the event, hence the correct name for this whole thing is “The 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize”; and (b) there is wagering. The numbers that follow each title are the early odds from William Hill bookmakers.

David Bowie, Blackstar – 4/1
Radiohead, A Moon Shaped Pool – 4/1
Anohni, Hopelessness – 6/1
Laura Mvula, The Dreaming Room – 6/1
Michael Kiwanuka, Love and Hate – 6/1
Skepta, Konnichiwa – 6/1
Bat For Lashes, The Bride – 8/1
Kano, Made in the Manor – 8/1
The 1975, I Like It When You Sleep... – 8/1
Jamie Woon, Making Time – 10/1
Savages, Adore Life – 10/1
The Comet Is Coming, Channel the Spirits – 10/1

As I’m sure there are some unfamiliar names on the list (Skepta? Comet Is Coming?), you can read all about the nominees here.
