Before You Sit Down to Watch the Tragically Hip Broadcast Saturday Night, Consider This
News that the CBC had agreed to broadcast the final show on the Tragically Hip’s Man Machine Poem tour came down on June 17. In a story on the CBC’s website were these sentences:
Internal discussions about the possibility of carrying the Kingston concert began after the tour was first announced, Dettman said, but conversations started in earnest with the Hip’s team after seeing tens of thousands of signatures for a petition asking for a broadcast of the show.
Let’s give credit where credit is due: Kelly McAlpine of Orillia, Ontario. It was she who started the petition at Change.org, eventually collecting 31,823 supporters.
Kelly has posted this update:
AUG 17, 2016 — Hi Everyone!!
I’m sure you are just excited as I am to see The Hip’s live broadcast via CBC on Saturday. I cannot thank you enough for all of your support in making this happen. 🙂
Your messages and comments have truly made my millennium. These are gifts I will always treasure and will certainly carry me through any day where I’m ‘almost’ convinced that nothing can be done. You have helped me prove that something CAN always be done and that it NEVER hurts to ask. Thank you so so much.
Wherever you are celebrating The Hip Saturday night, I’m hoping that you will consider posting me a picture. I have set up the following Facebook page:
