Sloan’s Lost Super Friendz LP Reissued

I’ll let Jay explain:

In 1995, our band Sloan had “broken-up” (or at least had appeared to be coasting into “retirement” on a series of “final shows” that really only became a “hiatus”), our friends in jale were going through personnel changes after their first LP and Thrush Hermit were still playing the waiting game by holding out for a proper US major label before releasing their debut full length.

Into this void, Halifax’s The Super Friendz released what now seems to be the LP that crystallized and defined the east coast underground pop sound of the mid-1990’s. Mock Up, Scale Down had all the hallmarks. Left-field current influences married to the classics, multiple singer-songwriters each adding their own dimension and an abundance of melody that seemed to have been under prohibition in the grunge-ified post-Nirvana musical fallout.

At the time, likely due to finance or nerves, murderecords released this excellent debut only on compact disc. It only us took 18 years, but Mock Up, Scale Down is finally being reissued on deluxe 180 gm vinyl!

The new 2013 remastering is most excellent. Having the whole album spread out over 2 LPs allows the songs of guitarists Matthew Murphy, Drew Yamada and bassist Charles Austin (accompanied by the buoyant energy and expertise of drummer Dave Marsh) to sound clearer and more exciting (possible?? yes!) than the original release.

The double LP comes in a gatefold sleeve, includes a full high quality digital download and is available in a limited edition of only 500 copies.

As an added bonus, the hidden track on the initial CD release, “Length Of Heart” is included on the vinyl as is an unreleased version of “Boots” from the Mock Up, Scale Down sessions. Hope you dig, as much as we have, revisiting one of the best LP’s of the 1990’s and a quintessential record of the rich Halifax music scene of the time.

Super Friendz forever, dude.

  • Kinda a misleading headline – really Sloan's only involvement is that it's their record label. I thought it was going to be about Sloan recording a version of a Super Friendz album or something. Oh well, Mock Up is a killer album that people should buy on vinyl.
