Some stats ahead of the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announcement

After weeks of fan voting (since concluded) and deliberation by the voting committee, the 2024 inductees for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be announced on Sunday (April 21). Head of that, here are some stats provided by these people. I quote directly from their research.

• Groups are the most common inductees (50.2% of inductees, 127 in total) – more specifically, all-male groups are the most common (42.3% of inductees, 107 in total), followed by male solo artists (35.2% of inductees, 89 in total), and female solo artists (11.5% of inductees, 29 in total)

• R&B is the most popular musical genre of the inductees (82 inductees), followed by Pop (69 inductees) and Rock (68 inductees); 4 is the average and median number of genres associated with an inductee

• On average, artists are inducted 39.7 years after the start of their career (median is 38 years)

• 60.5 is the average age of an inductee

• American artists are the most common inductees (75.1% of inductees, 190 in total), followed by artists from the United Kingdom (20.2% of inductees, 51 in total)

• New York City is the city that has produced the most inductees – 27 – followed by London, which has produced 26 inductees, and Los Angeles – 17 inductees

• In the United States, California is the state that has produced the most inductees (31), followed by New York (30) and Michigan (16)• Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, and she remains to be the youngest female solo artist inducted – she was 45 years old at the time of her induction in 1987

• Stevie Wonder is the youngest solo inductee to date (inducted at 38 years old), while least year’s inductee Willie Nelson is the oldest solo inductee (inducted at 90 years old)

• The disco band Chic remains as the most nominated music act that has yet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame – they have been nominated record-breaking 11 times, last time in 2017; Chuck Willis and MC5 are tied as the second most nominated acts that have yet to be inducted since both have been nominated on 6 occasions

• 25 people have been inducted into the hall of fame two times (for example as a solo artist and a part of a group / duo), while Eric Clapton is the only artist that has been inducted 3 times (as a member of The Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist); Stevie Nicks is the first woman to be inducted twice (first time as a member of Fleetwood Mac and second time as a solo artist)

• The Spinners are the inductee with the most years spanning between the start of their career and the induction into the Hall of Fame – 69 years – while 6 groups (Run DMC, The Who, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Police, The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival) are the inductees with the least amount of active years before their induction – 26 years

• 2022 was the year with the most separate female acts inducted into the Hall of Fame as performers – 4 in total – Dolly Parton, Carly Simon, Pat Benatar and Annie Lennox (as part of Eurythmics)
