Someone Is Turning “Britpop” into a Soft Drink

And who better than Blur bass player, Alex James?

Back in October, Rock’s Most Famous Cheesemaker™ filed for a trademark for the word “Britpop” to be used in conjuction with some kind of refreshing beverage.  News of this filing was made public last Friday by the Intellectual Property Office in the UK.

So what will it taste like?  Wrong question.  The first step is to nail down the trademark using various descriptors (“beverage enriched with added minerals” is one) before starting with any kind of formulation.  Once Alex gets the trademark, he’ll have exclusive rights to market a drink–any kind of drink, including soda and alcoholic types–under the name “Britpop” for at least ten years.

Alex is no stranger to trademarking names for food products.  At least six of his cheeses have their own trademarks including one called “Blue Monday.”  New Order must be thrilled with that.
