
Spotify has a new deal with ChatGPT. Here’s what that means.
Yesterday, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the people behind ChatGPT, said that more than 800 million people are using its AI services every month. That works to “six billion tokens per minute”–whatever that means–on the API.
But the big announcement had to do with new partnerships with third parties. One of the first is Spotify. I quote from them: “Starting today, both Spotify Free and Premium users can bring Spotify into their ChatGPT conversations to receive personalized music and podcast recommendations.”
That means anyone who mentions Spotify in a ChatGPT prompt will get a message asking, “Hey, wanna connect your Spotify account to me?” Once that happens, you can ask for it to play specific songs, albums, playlists, or podcasts. And if you need recommendations for a specific mood (“I have to study for an exam. What’s the best music for concentration?”), ChatGPT will link you to Spotify to listen.
At least one major label is loving this. Universal Music says, “We’re supportive of these types of integrations as they offer a pathway for fans to connect with the artists they love as well as to move fluidly from discovery to enjoyment of new music—and all within a monetized ecosystem,”
Other new ChatGPT partners are Canva, Booking.com, and Expedia. A ton more are coming, including TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Uber, and Peloton.
