Spotify is testing music videos in 11 countries

Spotify is always looking for ways to diversify is offerings beyond just streaming music. They’ve already gone deep into podcasts and audiobooks, so what’s next? Music videos, apparently.

Beta testing of music videos on Spotify is underway for premium subscribers in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya. (I’d love to know their criteria for choosing test countries. Why not the US and Japan, the number one and two music markets on the planet?)

When subscribers call up/are served up a song which has an accompanying music video, users can tap a button on Spotify’s “Now Playing” screen and BOOM! There’s the video. And yes, you can turn your phone to watch the clip in landscape mode.

This test will also launch with Spotify’s desktop and TV apps. No downloads, though.

The overall hope is that offering videos will boost the number of people willing to pay for a Spotify subscription.
