Spotify says that Canadian artists are “thriving” on the platform with latest report

Every year, Spotify publishes a Loud & Clear report on the state of streaming in territories around the world. This week, it was Canada’s turn with a review of how things shook out on the platform in 2024. Bottom line? Canada is one of the world’s greatest exporters of music.

Some highlights.

  • Royalties earned by Canadian artists were up 5% to $460 million last year.
  • 92% of that came from listeners outside the country.
  • 40% were generated by indie artists and indie labels.
  • Canadian artists are streamed 15 million hours every day.
  • Canadian music is featured on 2.4 billion playlists.

Then there’s this shot: “Spotify alone paid more in royalties to the Canadian music sector in 2023 than the entire Canadian commercial radio industry combined…” That’s directed at proponents of Canada’s Bill C-11, which would require Spotify to invest in the development of Canadian talent.

Expect Spotify to really, really push this report. They don’t want to pay that 5% talent development levy–which, of course, is pocket change for this multi-billion-dollar company. Another example of tech bros trying to have their cake and eat it, too.
