Stephen King’s radio stations are signing off forever this month

Hardcore Stephen King fans know that he bought a cluster of radio stations in Bangor, Maine, so he could listen to radio that he liked. For 41 years, King has been a broadcasting mogul, running terrestrial stations 100.3 WKIT (“Stephen King’s Rock Station”), 98.3 + 103.1/WZLO (“Maine’s Adult Alternative”), and 620 AM WZON (“Retro Radio”). There’s also Zone Radio, an online station (www.zoneradio.com).

Run by The Zone Corporation, listeners learned this week that all three stations will go dark on December 31. Why? They’re all money-losers. Here’s what King said in a press release:

“While radio across the country has been overtaken by giant corporate broadcasting groups, I’ve loved being a local, independent owner all these years. I’ve loved the people who’ve gone to these stations every day and entertained folks, kept the equipment running, and given local advertisers a way to connect with their customers. Tabby and I are proud to have been a part of that for more than four decades.”
