Streaming services are tightening bandwidth as demand grows (but premium porn is now free).

God, can you imagine if the internet went down while we’re all self-isolating? It’s too awful to contemplate. But with so many people staying at home and streaming content, the internet is under a lot of stress.

In the EU, Netflix has throttled things back from all its HD offerings to just the old standard definition of 480p. YouTube has done the same thing.

Disney+ has reduced its bandwidth by 25% while Amazon Prime, Facebook, Instagram and Apple TV have done something similar. I haven’t seen any announcements from the streaming music services yet, but you know they have to be thinking about it.

Then there’s Pornhub, who may have actually added to the problem. After making is premium content free for the hard-hit countries of Italy, France, and Spain, the company has decided to open things up to the rest of the planet. From the press release:

With nearly one billion people in lockdown across the world because of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important that we lend a hand and provide them with an enjoyable way to pass the time. We hope by expanding our offer of free Pornhub Premium worldwide, people have an extra incentive to stay home and flatten the curve.

I should also point out that the company is donating 85% of its video sales to performers who have had to stop work because of the pandemic.
