Study: Radio is still king in the car

Quu is a research company that focuses on tech in the car and in the dashboards of all sorts of vehicles. They just released its 2024 In-Vehicle Visuals Report which looks at where radio sits within a group of the 100 top-selling cars and trucks in the US. Here are some top-line facts:

  • AM radio is available in 98% of vehicles
  • FM radio is available in 100% of vehicles
  • 98% of new vehicles can handle Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 92% come preinstalled with SiriusXM satellite radio (whether people subscribe is another story)
  • 70% have HD radio. Outside of Cadillac, GM vehicles seem to be the exception; they’re just not into it. Given that GM sells 1 in 5 vehicles in North America, you can see the problem.
  • Weirdly, only 36% of dashboards have a button for the radio.
  • 20% of vehicles come with built-in streaming apps (AppleMusic and Amazon Alexa, for example. Radio will have to watch this trend.
