Sunday Morning Music News

It’s been a slow weekend for news, what with Hurricane Irene occupying the attention of the US east coast and most of Britain at Reading and Leeds.  But there’s still stuff to talk about.  Plus!  A ten-song Hurricane Irene playlist for the iPod.

Academy Award-winning director Sofia Coppola (daughter of Frances Ford) married Thomas Mars, the singer for the French band Phoenix at a ceremony in Italy.

Jane’s Addiction was a last-second no-show at Reading last night because Perry Farrell’s throat was unable to appear.  Severely swollen, apparently.

Hurricane Irene gives everyone a reason to break out the Ramones’ “Rockaway Beach” one more time. In fact, here are some good hurricane songs.

1.  The Ramones – “Rockaway Beach”

Might as well start with that one, huh?

2.  The Mission – “Like a Hurricane”

Yes, I could have picked the Neil Young original or the cover by Roxy Music, but what would be the fun in that?

3.  Bob Dylan – “Hurricane”

This song has nothing to do with weather, of course, but it’s a track that’s turned up on a lot of hurricane-themed playlists.  Going with the storm surge on this one.

4. Thirty Seconds to Mars – “Hurricane”

Here’s the censored version, but the uncensored director’s cut is more fun.

5.  The Scorpions – “Rock You Like a Hurricane”

Be sure to follow this one up with the Scorp’s “Wind of Change.”

6.  The Rolling Stones – “Hurricane”

An obscurity.  Keef on vocals.

7.  Something Corporate – “Hurricane”

Not horribly well known, but certainly worthy of this playlist.

8.  The Hush Sound – “Hurricane”

Pretty stuff that should be reserved for after the storm has passed.

9.  The Black Lips – “Katrina”

Just a reminder of what a hurricane can do.

10.  Bette Midler – “Wind Beneath My Wings”

Just kidding.
