Survey: Canadians HATE AI-generated music and podcasts

Good. I hate this stuff, too. I’m glad that I’m not alone.

Signal Hill Insights has something called their monthly Audio on the Move survey. Each month, they look at issues involving Canadians’ attitudes and behavior to all things audio. This time they talked to 6,116 Canadians over the age of 12 through May and June. What did they think of AI music and podcasts?

Canada ranks DEAD LAST out of 32 countries in terms of our enthusiasm for AI-generated products and services. From Broadcast Dialogue:

J”ust five per cent said they like AI-generated music, while four per cent said they enjoy AI-generated podcasts. A ‘supermajority’ said they dislike AI-generated content – 65% for music, and 68% for podcasts. Less than a third were neutral (29% for music and 28% for podcasts).

“The youngest group of Canadians, aged 12-17, were comparatively less negative towards AI-generated audio, according to the study, with 42% neutral about AI-generated  podcasts and 37% neutral about AI-generated music.

“Audio on the Move also asked respondents about their feelings towards fully AI-generated social media images and videos, as well as online articles, blogs and news. It found a clear majority of Canadians also dislike AI-generated content across those platforms. The fewest, 60%, dislike AI-generated images or memes on social media – just five points fewer than for music.”

Meanwhile, AM/FM radio continues to do well in the vehicle dashboards of Canadians. It’s the most-used medium (46%) when it comes to listening in the car. Music streaming comes second at 27%. In third place? YouTube (including YouTube Music) with 11%.
