Taylor Swift broke the one week album sales record in the US. HOWEVER…

When we heard that Taylor Swift sold 2.7 million copies of Life of a Showgirl on its first day on sale with 2.7 million copies (and here’s the sneaky way she did it), it was inevitable that the album would break Adele’s one-week sales record for 25 back in 2015.

With the sales week ending at 11:59 pm last night, we can say that the record sold around 3.5 million copies, which, if you dig into the numbers is about 20,000 more than 25 did a decade ago. But the devils are in the details.

  • If we look at just physical and digital sales, LoaS sold 3.2 million. The other 300,000-ish came from something called “Track Equivalent Streams” which gives a physical metric to streams.
  • Adele still holds the actually number of physical copies of a record sold in a week: 3.378 million.
  • LoaS sold a monstrous 1.2 million copies on vinyl, beating the record of 895,000 copies of The Tortured Poets Department.

Final sales figures will be announced on Monday.
