Taylor Swift sold HOW MANY copies of her new album on day one?

Taylor Swift remains a sales monster. On the first day Life of a Showgirl was on sale, it moved 2.7 million copies in the US alone. To put that into perspective, the highest seller for its first week in the stores is Adele’s 25, which sold 3.4 million in its first week back in 2015. That means Tay-Tay will has six days to break that record. She’s already eclipsed the seven day total of The Tortured Poets Department, which was 2.61 million.

How did she do it? Swifties pre-ordered a record amount of copies over weeks and weeks ahead of the official release this past Friday. Pre-orders are a relatively new thing in the record industry.

Swifties also bought multiple copies: digital, CDs, and vinyl. There were multiple variants of the physical copies (different artwork), which also encouraged the pre-order and purchase of more than one copy.

And it’s the vinyl story that’s specially amazing. LfaS sold 1.2 million copies on vinyl. That beat her 895,000 units sold for The Tortured Poets Department–and again, that’s a seven day total. So yeah, she beat that record by 300,000 copies in one day.

There’s more to come, too. Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl ran for for three days in theaters. It was number one at the box office over all other movie. It made $15.8 million just on its first day and US$46 million globally for the weekend.
