Teenager Sent to Prison for Planning Attack at Elton John Concert

A 19-year-0ld from London named Haroon Syed has been sentenced to more than 16 years in jail after he admitted to planning a terror attack that may have included an Elton John concert in Hyde Park.

According to evidence presented in court, Syed investigated buying explosives online, looked at getting a suicide vest, tried to locate a machine gun and researched areas of London where he might launch an attack. One site was an Elton John show in Hyde Park last September 11. Other potential targets included Buckingham Palace and busy Oxford Street, which is the busiest stretch of shopping in all of Europe.

Digging further into the story reveals that Syed wasn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Security forces described his plans as “crude” and “ill thought-out.” He was caught when he shared his plans with a fake contact that had been set up by authorities.

Syed pleaded guilty back in April. Sentencing was handed out this past week.
