The 100 Year Old “Mixtapes”
Back when recorded music was still a new thing, many talking machines doubled as recording devices as well as playback units. Families who purchased the new machines and set about documenting themselves for future generations.
Most of these recordings are long gone, but the Wall family of New Southgate, London, has had their audio documents preserved. They feature talking, hymns, the popular songs of the day and sounds of the neighbourhood. All were made between 1902 and 1917.
They’re now on display at the Museum of London.
