The annual Gord Downie Chanie Wenjack Fund benefit is tonight in Toronto
Each October around the anniversary of Gord Downie‘s passing on October 17, 2017, there’s an event at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto that raises money from the Downie Wenjack Fund, as part of Secret Path Week, which runs this year from October 17-22. This is the fourth annual SPW.
If you’re just joining, this is a national movement that commemorates Gord’s wish for reconciliation in Canada. Chanie, of course, was the young man who escaped from a residential school in Kenora but was later found dead. His passing was on October 22, 1966.
The night at the ‘Shoe will feature reps from the Downie Wenjack Fund, music from Graeme Jonez and Hip tribute band Grace, 2. Doors open at 8:15 tomorrow night (October 17). I’ll be your host.
All profits will go to the Downie Wenjack Fund. That includes ticket sales, merch, and raffle tickets. And speaking of raffles, the prize is a guitar signed by three remaining members of The Hip.
Over the last three years, $54,000 have been raised. The goal is “To truly pay tribute to The Tragically Hip and honor Gord Downie’s legacy we must use the power of the music to raise money and awareness for great causes.”
