The Apple Car is Coming. Apparently.
It’s called Project Titan and it’s an actual car. According to various reports, Apple has 600 (!!!) people working on it and have just received approval to triple that workforce. Orders are to have this thing ready to ship by 2019.
Rumours of an iCar/Apple Car have been swirling for at least a year, although they really began to pick up in February. Since then, there’s been leak after leak, including reports of Apple securing a testing ground at an old military bases near San Francisco. There have also been plenty of stories of Apple hiring away engineers from companies like Fiat Chrysler and (most interestingly) Tesla.
The alleged iCar will be fully electric like the Tesla and may or may not be self-driving. Whatever the case, you know that this thing is gonna be loaded with tech and gizmos.
Apple has long wanted to get into the dashboards of cars, turning vehicles into apps for the iPhone. Sure, they have CarPlay, which is starting to make appearances in a variety of vehicles. But an Apple car would avoid all those messy negotiations with auto manufacturers. And since Google is already working on their car, Apple doesn’t want them to get any kind of advantage.
