The Canadian government is also wondering about TikTok. Could a ban happen here?

While a bill that would ban TikTok is advancing through Congress, the Canadian government is also wondering about how dangerous TikTok might be.

The two approaches are unrelated but still the same. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Under Chinese law, companies are required to hand over data collected from its users. That include names, address, ages, email addresses, and even biometric information. In the case of the US, TikTok would be banned from all app stores in the country unless ByteDance sold it off to a non-Chinese company (and one not subject to Chinese law). A former Trump treasury secretary is mulling about a purchase, too. Gee, what could possibly go wrong there?

About 170 million people use the app in the US; about eight million Canadians use TikTok.

The Canadian investigation began in September 2023 and continues today. No decisions or findings have been released yet. The only thing that’s happened is that many Canadian government organizations have banned TikTok from government-issued devices.
