The family behind Walmart is getting into the festival business

The Walton family, the ultra-rich folks from Arkansas that control everything Walmart, have decided to get into the festival business.

The family, among the richest in America, wants to set fire to some of their cash by bankrolling a music event in the Ozarks called the FORMAT Festival (For Music+Art+Technology). There’s a 250-acre site about four miles from Bentonville, Arkansas (Walmart’s HQ), that’s been named as the site for a three-day blowout, September 22-24.

The lineup looks pretty good, too. Rüfüs Du Sol, Phoenix, Khruangbin, Beach House, The War On Drugs, Nile Rogers & CHIC, The Flaming Lips, Jungle, and Herbie Hancock have all signed up. Pretty eclectic stuff for that part of America.

The organizers of Lollapalooza will take care of the logistics. Expect multiple stages, “hidden forest areas,” a “disco barn,” a speakeasy, and more.
