The Famous Elvis Costello SNL Stunt

The season premiere of Saturday Night Live was actually pretty good.  Then again, when you have Tina Fey in your writing room for a week, you can have six new cast members and still pull it off.  The camoe apperaances by Aaron Paul were a nice touch, too.  And in case you missed it, last night’s show featured the first-ever network use of the word “blumpkin.”

All this–not the blumpkin bit–gives me an excuse to direct your attention to Open Culture and their resurrection of the video for the time Elvis Costello greatly pissed off NBC by performing “Radio Radio” when he was told not to.  Click the image for a look.

By the way, the drummer’s t-shirt reads “THANKS MALC,” a reference to Malcolm McLaren who, at the time, was managing the Sex Pistols.  Elvis was a last-minute substitute for the Pistols on SNL when they failed to get their work visas in time.
