The 2021 Polaris Music Prize Gala is TONIGHT!

The finale of the 2021 Polaris Music prize is coming up tonight (September 27) and after months of debating and arguing, one album will be named the best Canadian record of the year regardless of genre or commercial success. The goal is to expose albums that might otherwise go unnoticed by the general public.

Here’s the Short List in alphabetical order. If you don’t recognize many of the selections, then the Polaris people have done their job. You want music discovery? Here you go.

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson – Theory of Ice
Cadence Weapon – Parallel World
DijahSB – Head Above The Waters
Dominique Fils-Aimé – Three Little Words
Mustafa – When Smoke Rises
The OBGMs – The Ends
Klô Pelgag – Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs
TOBi – Elements Vol. 1
The Weather Station – Ignorance
Zoon – Bleached Wavves

The Grand Jury–the people who have to make this final choice–were chosen last week. These people come from 200-ish people in the overall jury pool and have a tough job ahead of them.

MICHELLE DA SILVA – Xtra
JIM DI GIOIA – Dominionated
MARY DICKIE – Freelance Journalist / Journaliste pigiste
DJ MELBOOGIE
FRANCELLA FIALLOS – CJLO 1690 AM

The Polaris Music Prize Gala–which, unfortunately, will be another virtual affair because of COVID–will happen at 8pm tonight through almost every CBC audio channel you can imagine. The winner will get $50,000 while everything else will take home $3,000.
