  • I have one quick question: Do you know where the CRTC gets their info/stats from? Specifically – “The average Canadian spends 17.5 hours a week listening to radio. That’s down from 17.7 hours in 2012.” My response – After spending over 25 yrs in the broadcasting business, I can tell you that all stats put out my the CRTC and any other gov’t agency, comes from & rely on BBM! This private entity is funded by ALL radio stations across the country and relies on a diary system to gather stats for the industry to take to their advertisers, agencies etc. A system that in short was developed back in the stone ages. To quote a number of industry insiders, the BBM is a joke, but its all they have to work with, in order to throw our meaningless stats. So when they say TSL is down slightly, you & I both know that’s not accurate. I made a very good living using this fossilized system, BUT when the public is subjected to this mis-information, my back goes up!

  • “The remaining listeners (9.5%) went to community, campus and non-profit stations.” I see where you get your 77.1% for private radio and 13.4% for the CBC (CRTC figure 4.2.2 – Radio tuning by station type in diary markets)…but I don’t see how you come up with the 9.5% figure??? Figure 4.2.2 only shows 2.6% for Campus & Community…please clarify.
