The Ongoing History of New Music, episode 1024: Survey Says! Useful and Odd Music Surveys and Polls

Call me nosy, but I love knowing what other people think about things. This is why I gravitate towards surveys, the kind of stories where ordinary people are asked for their opinions on and reactions to the most random things. For me, the weirder, the better.

For example, back in 2014, there was a poll in the UK that asked the question “Would you have sex with a robot if given a chance?”

One in five people said they would get jiggy with a robot. Almost 50% said that they wouldn’t think negatively of someone who did.

Here’s another. Some 2400 Americans were asked if “HTML” was a sexually transmitted disease. Tallying the responses, we learned that 11% of Americans thought that HTML was a venereal disease. It also found that 42% believed that a “motherboard” is a deck on a cruise ship. About 27% were under the impression that a “gigabyte” was an exotic South American insect. And 15% think that software is some sort of comfortable clothing.

Hey, I’m not making this up. Someone did the research.

One more, this time from Canada. Is bacon better than sex? Survey says 43% would rather chow down on some bacon. In British Columbia, the number was 50%. (I wonder what’s wrong out in BC?)

You know what’s coming next, right? If I’m talking about surveys, you know I’m about to pivot into surveys from the world of music. You would be correct.

    Weed.

BC has a rep for a LOT of weed, and well weed equals munchies. What’s better than bacon when you have the munchies?
