The Ongoing History of New Music, episode 1035: The annual Xmas show!

Christmas is almost here and this is the last Ongoing History program for 2024. And once again, we’re tired.

Me and the staff—that is to say me and technical producer Rob Johnston, have been working tirelessly to bring you the best in music documentary programming through this show, its accompanying podcast, and all the web stuff that emanates from it. And frankly, we need a break

There’s nothing more we’d like to do than to put our feet up for a couple of weeks, recharge, and do nothing but eat little cubes of cheese for a couple of weeks.

But contractually, we can’t do that yet. If we go to page 196, section 412, subsection 2, we encounter the following clause:

“The host and producer [that’s us] agree to provide a Christmas special on the final weekend before December 24th. There shall be no exceptions and excuses and no amount of whining will get you out of this obligation. Failure to provide said product will result in extreme financial penalties along with public shaming on all social media platforms.”

I’ve had people go over this and it’s pretty ironclad. So here we are./

Don’t get us wrong. We like Christmas. it’s just that this year, the calendar dictates that this show runs pretty close the day itself, there is no chance of an early getaway.

I keep telling Rob that he can retire to his couch to binge on TV and eat little cubes of cheese for about ten days after we give the people what they’ve been getting for many, many Christmases.

This is the 28th program in the Ongoing History series of Christmas specials. series, a tradition that goes all the way back to 1994. (if you do the math, you can see that we missed a couple, but that wasn’t our fault).

And once again, we will present festive songs you won’t hear anywhere else. Trust me.

Songs heard on this show:

  • Holligans, Punk Rock Christmas
  • The Vibrators, I Hate Christmas
  • Explosive Head, All I Want for Christmas (Is Not You Around)
  • Sluka, Christmas Tamales
  • Smash Mouth, Baggage Claim
  • Neck Deep, December
  • All Time Low, Merry Christmas Kiss My Ass
  • First to Eleven, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
  • Forlsen, Red Water (Christmas Mourning)
  • Melodica, All I Want for Christmas is You, Satan
  • Henry Rollins, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

And of course, Erlc Whilite has a playlist.
