The Tragically Hip announces a special 30th-anniversary edition of Road Apples and…WOW.

The Tragically Hip continue to mine their vast archives for more material to feed hungry fans. October 15 will see the release of a special 30th-anniversary edition of their second album, 1991’s Road Apples. And this is…extensive.

The collection (which is available for pre-order here) will feature:

  • Remastered tracks from Road Apples
  • Saskadelphia, the album of tracks that didn’t make Road Apples that came out back in May.
  • Hoof-Hearted, an album of previously unreleased demos, outtakes, and alternative versions
  • Live at the Roxy Los Angeles, May 3, 1991. This is the much-bootlegged record featuring the legendary “Killer Whale Tank” version of “New Orleans is Sinking.” That’ll be available exclusively as a 180-gram double vinyl set. That’s it. No other format or digital release.
  • Deluxe edition box sets will feature a Pure Audio Blu-Ray of the music, Dolby ATMOS mixes for both 5.1 and 7.1 and special binaural mixes.
  • A 36-page book detailing some hidden Hip history, Gord Downie’s handwritten notes, commentary from the band, and never-before-seen photos.

  • I think “Killer Whale Tank” is going to be on the CD release, but no digital release.

  • I was disappointed at the price of the deluxe box. $225 is about double what it should be. Even $150 would be reasonable.

  • Wake me up when I can get the Roxy gig as a stand-alone CD.

  • Sadly the surround mixes are all rubbish – when will A&R guys figure out that Richard Chycki doesn’t understand surround mixing? That doesn’t take away ANY of his other talents, but he clearly doesn’t get surround. If any other title gets this treatment, please consider Bob Clearmountain, Elliot Scheiner, Frank Filipetti, Steven Wilson, Bruce Soord, Giles Martin, etc
