The Weezer Cruise: Day Three

[Weezer invited some of their best buddies and a boatload of fans to cruise through the Caribbean this week.  Here’s the latest report from onboard the Carnival Destiny from special correspondent Julia Wallace. – AC]

I awoke this morning the ship pulled into the dock in Cozumel Mexico. I got up, ran 4 miles around the track, drank a ton of coffee and it was off to the beach. Here are some fun facts from the Weezer Cruise I jotted down last night:

  • “El Scorcho” is still the very best Weezer song.
  • I think Rivers is actually totally into it. I no longer believe that he is spooked. Pat has been coming forward to play guitar so Rivers can do the wandering singer thing. He gets right into the crowd and literally rocks the boat.
  • Everyone still loves the song “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus.
  • Lou Barlow is possibly the nicest man in rock and roll. He is also afraid of all modes of transportation. I mean it. Planes, trains, cars, boats… Playing in rock and roll bands for a living must not be easy.
  • Brian Bell sent his demo tape to Weezer courtesy of “Radio Shack and Brian Bell”.
  • People born and bred in New Orleans are the best ones to make friends with.
  • Ozma are huge. People love them. And the lead singer never takes his hat off. Not even for walks on the beach in Cozumel.
  • While Captain Cuomo makes a great wandering singer, he makes a terrible DJ. He fell asleep in the booth.
  • Brian Bell is the best dressed gentleman in modern rock. Who saw that coming? He rocked french cuffs and more Prada shoes during the first Pinkerton and b-sides show.
  • The Carnival Destiny (or S.S. Weezer) is the only boat on which you can hear both Mudhoney and Soundgarden before 8am. Heaven at sea, my friends. Heaven at sea.

Now I am off to eat my weight in nachos. Tonight we leave Cozumel to the sounds of Dinosaur Jr. before Weezer show #3. More on that soon.
